United For Care (U-CARE)

Brief

The UNITED FOR CARE (U-CARE) Project is a five-year initiative launched in 2024 and funded by Global Affairs Canada. The project addresses the disproportionate burden of unpaid care and domestic work carried by women and adolescent girls in northern Ghana. U-CARE promotes gender-responsive policies and practices that aim to recognize, redistribute, and reduce unpaid care work while enhancing the voice and agency of women and girls in household and community decision-making.

Operating across 10 districts in the Northern, Northeast, and Savannah Regions, including Savelugu, Mion, Kumbungu, Zabzugu, East Mamprusi, West Mamprusi, Mamprugu Moagduri, Central Gonja, East Gonja, and West Gonja. The project targets 50,000 families in both urban and rural areas.

Goal
To promote gender-responsive care systems that recognize, reduce, and redistribute unpaid care work while strengthening the agency and voice of women and girls in decision-making processes.

Objectives

  • Advocate for policies and practices that recognize and address the burden of unpaid care work.
  • Empower women and adolescent girls to participate actively in household and community decision-making.
  • Promote equitable sharing of care responsibilities among men and boys.
  • Engage national and local stakeholders to integrate care work into development planning.

Key Achievements

  • Conducted national and regional inception meetings with government ministries, agencies, and local authorities.
  • Engaged stakeholders at the district level to introduce the project and identify target communities.
  • Laid the groundwork for reaching 50,000 families across 10 districts in northern Ghana.
