SEND GHANA

Promoting Food Security and Agricultural Governance Project

Under the Together Against Poverty (TAP)/GROW Campaign

Project Overview

The Promoting Food Security and Agricultural Governance Project aims to strengthen agricultural governance and enhance food security in Ghana. This initiative engages smallholder farmers, gender officers, farmer-based organizations, social welfare officers, planning officers, and other key stakeholders. By working with both demand-side actors (farmers and civil society) and supply-side actors (insurance companies, agricultural extension officers), the project addresses critical gaps in the agricultural sector.

Through capacity-building and advocacy, the project increases knowledge on gender-responsive budgeting, land rights, the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), and climate change financing to ensure a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural sector.

Project Duration: 6 months

Project Objectives

  1. Enhance participation of smallholder farmers and citizen groups in budget planning and implementation.
  2. Promote CAADP commitments within Ghana’s agricultural policies.
  3. Advocate for increased investment in agriculture and policy reforms to mitigate potential negative impacts of the IMF bailout.

Key Achievements:

  • Capacity Building on Gender-Responsive Budgeting

62 gender desk officers in 30 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and farmer-based organizations were trained to integrate gender principles into budgets and analyze national and district budgets.

  • Climate Change & Agricultural Insurance Awareness

164 smallholder rice and livestock farmers in Shai Osudoku and Ada were trained on climate change adaptation and agricultural insurance to enhance resilience against environmental shocks.
