COCOA ADVOCACY: Multi-Actor Partnership

Brief Description
Launched in 2017, the Cocoa Advocacy Project addresses the persistent inequalities faced by cocoa farmers, despite their contribution of 6–7% to Ghana’s GDP. Implemented through the Ghana Civil Society Cocoa Platform (GCCP), this project fosters collaboration between Ghanaian and German civil society actors through a Multi-Actor Partnership (MAP) approach.
Now in its third phase (2024–2028), the project continues to serve as a unified platform for stakeholders including cocoa farmers, CSOs, the media, and policymakers to engage in evidence-based advocacy on issues like child labour, fair pricing, climate change, and sustainable farming practices.
Project Coverage: 20 cocoa districts across Eastern and Central regions including Asamankese, Suhum, Oda, Bawdua, Twifo Praso, and Jukwa.

Goal
To promote a sustainable and equitable cocoa value chain by strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration and amplifying the voice of farmers and civil society in both Ghana and Germany.

Objectives

  • Increase awareness and engagement on key sector issues such as farmgate pricing, pesticide use, and climate impact.
  • Empower cocoa farmers and CSOs through knowledge sharing, training, and coalition-building.
  • Strengthen local and international partnerships to support cocoa sustainability.

Key Achievements

  • Knowledge exchange platform established for farmer groups across Ghana’s seven cocoa regions, leading to a draft roadmap for joint advocacy.
  • Increased public dialogue and visibility of cocoa farmgate pricing discussions.
  • Over 500 cocoa farmers in 20 communities trained on cocoa policies, enabling stronger advocacy roles.
