Purpose

To collectively discuss the various ‘culturally accepted’ practices that contribute to crippling efforts by both government and non-state actors in the fight against corruption.
The durbars were also aimed at deepening citizens understanding of Ghana’s anti-corruption laws with specific focus on the whistle blowers Act, educating them on the available platforms for reporting corruption as well as enlightening them on the adverse effects of corruption and the need to have a collective voice in fighting same.

Output

• Citizens understanding on issues of corruption across the 5 districts and 10 communities enhanced.
• Copies of the presentations were made available to interested citizens and assembly persons to downstream the message to the larger constituency. For instance at Eremon in the Lawra District, a former presiding member who doubles as a pastor pledged to use every platform available to him to educate the citizenry.
• In Chinnchang of the Sissala East District, the Imam who participated in the programme pledged to educate the congregation in his Friday sermons. Incidentally, the programme happened on a Friday and he immediately preached to the people how the Holy Book frowns on the practice. He for instance quoted portion of the Quran that says “And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it (in bribery) to the rulers in order that (they might aid) you to consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin while you know it is unlawful” Quran (2:118).
• The District Director of NCCE also present in the mosque took a few minutes and educated the people on electoral fraud and the need for all and sundry to desist from all acts that threatens the peace and stability of the country.
• Organised groups also pledged to reach out to their larger constituents by way of down streaming the information.
• NCCE/CHRAJ from all districts pledged to continue with the sensitization of citizens using their existing platforms.
