USAID awarded the consortium of CARE International in Ghana, Action Aid Ghana, SEND GHANA and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding, Ghana the Northern Ghana Governance Activity (NGGA) under a cooperative agreement for a 5-year implementation period. It directly supports USAID/Ghana Country Development and Co-operative Strategy (2013-2017), especially on its:
Development Objective 1: “Strengthened Responsive, Democratic Governance” and
Development Objective 2: “Sustainable and Broad Economic Growth.”
This capacity building intervention covers 30 target Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions of Ghana. CARE International in Ghana is the consortium lead. Each consortium member leads in the design and technical stewardship of a particular project component, in which it has proven superior technical expertise.
The NGGA goal is, “strengthened responsive governance for improved agriculture development in Ghana.” This NGGA’S strategic emphasis will be achieved through four result areas:
- Strengthened institutional capacity for effective coordination and integration of key actors in decentralized agricultural development
- Improved enabling environment for community organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector to participate in decentralization and agricultural development
- Enhanced women’s participation in local governance and increased access to agricultural information and opportunities
- Increased community dialogue and consensus building to manage conflict and ensure sustainable development in agriculture
